“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.” – 1 Peter 5:8-9 (NLT)
While the enemy looks to devour anyone that opposes the kingdom of darkness, we fight from victory because of Jesus. We resist the enemy by standing strong and steadfast in our faith. Faith is our weapon. 1 John 5:4 tells us “For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.” We use our faith to resist the schemes of the evil one, and as a result we remain standing firm against him.
David showed this confident faith when he stood up against Goliath. 1 Samuel 17 describes the events where David was following his father’s instructions to deliver food to his brothers, but when he arrives, he sees that the Israelite army is being taunted by the Philistines and the giant Goliath. While the writer goes into great description of the armour that Goliath was wearing and the threat that Israel was up against, David’s first response was, “who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” (ref. 1 Samuel 17:26)
David knew his position in God and openly addressed that Goliath was uncircumcised – meaning he was stating the obvious to the Israelites army… they had a covenant with the living God and Goliath did not. It didn’t matter what the giant looked like, how he was protected with armour, or what words he was spewing out. None of that intimidated him. What mattered was Who he belonged to, and the position he had under God’s authority.
It doesn’t matter what our giant looks like, or the threats he’s making against us. What matters is where we’re placing our faith. The One who is called “Faithful and True” – Jesus - has been given all authority which He has placed in the hands of the Church to stand victorious over the evil one. (ref. 1Corinthians 15:57; Luke 10:19).
Today, let’s hold our position firm in who we are in Christ, keeping our eyes set upon Him, knowing that victory is the foundation from which we stand on and fight from. And if today, your faith could use some reassurance, I would encourage you to do a quick search of the promises that we have in Christ – renew your mind with Truth and ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen your faith so that you’ll remain confident when faced with a giant.
