“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.” – Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV)
Trust God.
These two words loom in the heart of every Christian. Will we trust God regardless of what our circumstance is? In the face of every challenge, temptation, heartache, loss, injustice, blessing, joy and victory. Will we trust God?
We don’t have to be a Christian very long to discover how difficult these two words are to obey. Will we trust Him when we don’t understand Him? When life doesn’t make sense? When we have unanswered questions, or when we feel as though He’s nowhere to be found?
Will we trust Him when everything is playing out the way we want it to, living in abundance and comfortable with how life is going… will we have a desire to trust Him then or do we have more trust in the things that have filled our lives and made us feel satisfied.
We can be so great at conditional trust, where if God does for me, then we will do for Him. But trust speaks of the reliability of the one who we’re placing trust in.
I believe that trusting God is being content in Him. Paul speaks of having learned how to be content in God. “I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” (ref. Philippians 4:11-13)
We can’t be truly content in life without trusting in God. With all our heart. In all our ways. Trust. While it may not be easy, and we may not have complete understanding… if we trust Him, He will direct our every step. Even when we might think there’s a better way. Even when we see we’re losing what we once had. Even when it appears we’re going backwards… Trusting in Him in all circumstances will lead us to the path that He’s planned and purposed for us – it’s a promise that we can cling to.
