Time to Purge?

I recently read an article where the non-Christian writer, stated his view of Christianity from what he observed from the media, and came to the conclusion that it appears that Christians are 90% like everyone else, and only about 10% different. He then went on to say that with such a small gap difference, why would he ever desire to be one?

I know that this is just one person’s perspective, and his conclusion likely had an array of variables that are unknown to us, but I’ve thought of that comment so often since reading it, because it makes me sad, and honestly kind of angry too. Aren’t we supposed to be seen more differently by the world? Aren’t we supposed to be IN the world but not OF it?

It’s a great opportunity to look inward… Do I look different from the world around me?

“Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” – Romans 12:2

Are we involved in any behaviours or customs of the world that are stopping God from transforming us into His likeness? And maybe even at a quick glance it won’t be something that will stand out to us, but rather where we need to be seeking the Holy Spirit to reveal anything in us that needs to go. It’s the Spirit of God who transforms us… Who teaches us God’s will and God’s ways, so it’s got to be His voice and leading that we pay attention to in order to address what’s rooted in us that’s a copy of the world.

“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is” - Ephesians 5:15–17, ESV

The days are evil alright… and I don’t want to be a fool to the lies of the enemy that manipulate us into thinking / being / operating in ways that aren’t God’s best for me.

Let’s have the courage to pray this bold prayer today:

“Holy Spirit, is there anything that is hindering me from fulfilling God’s purpose for my life? Is there something I need to purge? Is there a behaviour or custom of the world that I’ve copied and adopted as part of me, that needs to be uprooted and repented of? Help me hear You clearly and follow Your direction as You reveal it to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

I believe, that while this purging process may be difficult and even painful, it will be worth it to surrender our ways to God’s ways, so that we can walk in the path of God’s will for our lives – His good and pleasing and perfect will.
