“I look up at Your macro-skies, dark and enormous,
Your handmade sky-jewelry,
Moon and stars mounted in their settings.
Then I look at my micro-self and wonder,
Why do You bother with us?
Why take a second look our way?”
- Psalm 8:3-4 (Msg)
There’s something so captivating about feeling the warm breeze sweep your hair up into the wind. Or walking along the shoreline at a beach, where your feet sink down into the wet sand as the waves splash up over them. Gazing out into a field at night where the fireflies are showcasing a mesmerizing light show.
When’s the last time you soaked in the glory of God’s creation?
The awe-inspiring, magnificent work of God through His creation draws humanity to see and understand Him in a unique and beautiful way. Expressing thoughts and feelings about the revelation of the creation around him, David penned these words that captured questions we can easily resonate with.
What is mankind that You are mindful of them?
Human beings that You should care for them? (v.4 NIV)
When we see the vastness of the world around us, the complexity and wisdom of God’s handiwork, and how it functions in precise order, time and season, we see how creation itself points to the supremacy of God.… every single detail from the macro level to the minute intricacy of the unseen micro molecule.
There’s a humility that comes when we consider where we fit in the divine order of creation. That this amazing, mighty, heavenly Creator would care about the smallness of each one of us. That He would love us so much that He would craft a plan of redemption before the foundation of the world, so that we can know Him and be known by Him through Jesus. A Designer who restores and redeems and makes new. A Designer like no other, who breathes fresh life into His children each day through His Spirit.
As we view ourselves, in light of the revelation of Who God is -even just what we’ve personally experienced through creation – may we hold the same humility that David had. May our hearts express the courteous respect towards such a Designer. The One, and Only, Perfect Designer. A Creator like no other.
