The Constant Fight

Paul writes, “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. But when you are directed by the Sprit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.” – Galatians 5:16-18 (NLT)

Paul admonishes the church in Galatia to live as Jesus followers. He addresses the war that wages in our heart and our life that’s between the sinful flesh and the spirit. The constant fight that we face day in and day out.

We are not alone in this battle. Every single Jesus follower, as long as they’re still breathing on this earth, are all still battling the fight against sin. If we try to fight in our own strength we will inevitably lose. It is only by the power of the Holy Spirit in us that we can stand victorious over the power of the flesh. Jesus ultimately won the battle on the cross and has given us authority by His blood, and His Spirit in us to free us from the captivity of sin.

We need to acknowledge our absolute dependence on God. We need Him above all else. When we are weak, He is our strength. We need to rest fully on the guidance of the Holy Spirit, who always draws us to goodness and wholeness and beauty.

Walk in the Spirit.

Be led by the Spirit.

Live by the Spirit.

Keep in step with the Spirit.

This is the daily conduct of one who is directed by the Spirit. These are commands on how to live, which require action and intentionality on our part…. To seek Him. To know Him… Desiring above all else to follow Him.

God, the Holy Spirit, dwells in us for purpose…. To strengthen us, to empower us, to reveal truth to us, to regenerate our hearts, to sanctify us, to cultivate gifts in us, He illuminates the Word to us, prays for us, guards us, convicts us, protects us, leads us, teaches us, and seals us. The work of the Holy spirit in us is crucial for victory!

May we trust Him today. Surrender to His leading, and follow through in action, knowing that He holds the power to triumph over every single battle that we’re in.
