Are you teachable?

Are you open to continue to learn and wrestle out what you believe and why you believe it?

Religion tends to tie us down to a set of rules that keep us in the confines of its control. But living a life in relationship with Jesus, through His Spirit, can break us out of the boxes that religious tradition may have built around our belief of who God is and how He operates.

In John 14:26, Jesus promises the disciples that “the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.”

The Holy Spirit is still teaching today! Reminding us of how Jesus lived and directing us to (and in) His Word.

Are we listening? Are we teachable? Are we willing to admit that we may not have things fully figured out…in ANY area?

If you’re familiar with the story of Job, his life is flipped upside down when satan is on the hunt to destroy his faith. In one day, Job receives news that his livestock, servants, and all his children have died. In mourning, Job’s three friends come to sit with him in his time of grief, and eventually they start trying to figure out why this has all happened to him – questioning what he has done in order for God to allow this to happen. All the while, Job never blames God or curses Him for what’s been done to him, even though he doesn’t understand it. Even with the addition of his body being afflicted with painful sores, He continues to show honour and reverence to God….and we’re told that Job was a blameless and upright man, although his friends questioned whether that was true.

There’s this line that stands out to me from the story of Job, where he enters into a long dialogue, speaking of his pain, questioning things, and recounting what He knows of God…and then says, “Lord teach me what I cannot see.” – Job 34:32 (ref Job 13:23-24).

What if we prayed that prayer? Assumed that posture in life?

“Lord teach me what I cannot see.”

Holy Spirit…I am open to You. Teach me Your ways. Teach me what You want me to do. Show me the plans you have for me. Show me which way I’m to go. No matter the wisdom and experience I may gain, help me to remain teachable.
