Sparrow Thoughts

During this pandemic season, while things have slowed down on the outside in the world around us, my mind has ramped up with activity, and all manner of thoughts. I don’t know about you, but my mind is moving at a pretty good speed on normal days. I went for a walk by myself this morning - to enjoy the sunshine on my face, with hope to get my mind to stop racing. While many of my thoughts were good, positive things to dream about for the future- if I’m being honest -there were also lots of worry and unknown spiralling thoughts that crept in and started to take over.

It was fairly quiet on my route while I walked, with only a few cars passing by, but what wasn’t quiet at all was the symphony of birds that sang the entire way. I kept thinking of this old hymn, “His eyes are on the sparrow”. Are you familiar with it? It’s an oldie!

The song is a beautiful description of how the Creator of all things cares even for the sparrows. The concept is taken from Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:25-27.

“Do not worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?

If God cares and provides for the littlest sparrow, doesn’t He also care and provide for me and my needs? God is majestic over all the universe that even the feeding of a bird falls within His concern. If God has given us life and a body, both certainly more important than food or clothing, will He not also give us the latter?

While my spiralling thoughts weren’t specific to food or clothing, we can draw this same assurance into other areas of our life. If we believe that God is our Creator, can we not also believe that He’ll care for His creation?

If birds are valuable to Him, am I going to believe that I am that much more valuable? If He would provide for the tiniest bird, would He not also provide for me?

Are there worries in our lives, that we need to acknowledge and amend them to an accurate view-point in our minds? Do we trust that God cares for us that much? He does!

So may you be encouraged, the next time you hear your own symphony of birds, reminding you just how much God cares for you.
