“Just as iron sharpens iron,
a person sharpens the character of their friend.” – Proverbs 27:17 (CJB)
The health and quality of our character is something that the enemy is always looking to mess with. If he can manipulate and deceive us into believing that we are someone different than who God created us to be, then we’ll live accordingly. We’ll live blinded under our own view of morality and with a wavering faith in the One who created us.
So how do we remain solid, bearing Godly characteristics?
We remain in the Word of God.
We follow the direction of the Holy Spirit.
We heed the guidance of Godly counsel.
God wants us to be governed by wisdom so that we do not fall prey to the lies and schemes of the enemy. We need that mental sharpness to be on guard. Just as an iron file can bring sharpness to a blade, so a good friend can bring the sharpness of solid character to another. Not any friend will do – only wise friends will make you more wise.
“He who walks with the wise will become wise,
But the companion of fools will suffer.” – Proverbs 13:20
I don’t know anyone who would willingly sign-up for suffering harm – we should be prudent in who we allow to have influence in our lives. Ever learned this lesson the hard way? If you answered yes, you’re not alone.
Who we surround ourselves with, are whispers of who we’ll become. Let’s choose wisely and pick friends who help us develop Jesus-like characteristics. Friends who instruct, correct, warn, strengthen, encourage, and love.
Who’s sharpening you?
Who are you sharpening?
