“Your Word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path.
I have taken an oath and confirmed it,
that I will follow Your righteous laws.”
- Psalm 119:105-106
I don’t know anyone who doesn’t desire to have a safe haven where they can retreat to… whether that’s at home or a special place that they can sneak away to and be refreshed by being there. I believe that this deep-rooted yearning in each of us comes from the fact that we were created by such a loving and kind God who designed us to be in intimate communion with Him. God wants us to stay close to Him. He wants to protect us.
The spiritual battle that we face daily, is one for our souls. A war over our mind, our time, attention, passions and actions, can all be exhausting at times. But God promises us that He is our Protector. He has equipped us with everything we need to journey on the best path for us, and to strengthen us along the way. He leads us by His Word and His Spirit. While our journey may not always make sense to us, we can trust that God’s plans and His ways will never guide us off-course.
The Israelites journeyed through the wilderness after their Egypt exodus, and they were guided by a pillar of fire at night, and a pillar of cloud during the day. God literally highlighted their pathway for them this way, always going before them, guiding them in the way in which He had planned out for them. The fire and cloud led them to Mount Sinai, where God gave the Law to Moses. The Word of God that would set apart His chosen people from all others.
In the same way, Christ’s Spirit in us, leads us - whispering instruction to us, and illuminating the Word of God to us so that we may have the revelation that God designed for the people who follow after Him. God’s Word and His Spirit lead us to a safe haven… they lead us to Him, His presence, and His power, which aren’t limited to a specific place in the natural realm. He is our Light in the darkness regardless of where we are located.
How much time are you spending in the safe haven that God has provided for you? If it’s been a while, may today be a day where you make the time to be with Him.
