Running and Quitting

You’ve likely heard the saying “Winners never quit”.

And while absolutely there are some things we never should quit, there’s a heck of a lot of quitting we should be doing. Especially as Christians.

A growing follower of Jesus should be quitting regularly.

As God defines us… leading us into specific areas of our calling that we’ve been given to fulfill during our time on earth, we don’t get there unless we become a quitter.

First and foremost, what we should NEVER quit:

Believing God is who He says He is and trusting that He’ll do what He says He’ll do.

Believing that we are who He says we are because of the work of Christ Jesus in us.

Believing the Holy Spirit’s work in us and listening to His direction and discernment.

Now onto the quitting:

Here’s what I think – winners quit all the time. And Christians should be quitting regularly too.

They need to quit some of the things that are slowing them down.

They need to quit the things that aren’t aligned with God’s will.

They need to quit relationships that are toxic and consume them from fulfilling the mission God has for them.

All the heroes of the faith had to quit to fulfill their mission.

Noah needed to quit caring about what others thought about him in order to build the ark and follow God’s instructions.

David needed to quit being a shepherd in order to become king.

Gideon needed to quit threshing wheat in a wine press in order to lead Israel through battle and come out victorious.

Rahab needed to quit her life of prostitution in order to be a part of the lineage of Jesus.

The key to becoming a good quitter, is knowing what and when to quit. As we lean into Jesus and listening to the Spirit of God, the internal war inside of us rages on between the flesh and Spirit. This is proof that the Holy Spirit is at work within us. But it will also call us to make choices…choosing the flesh or the Spirit’s will.

“Since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” – Hebrews 12:1

Let us lay aside the weight.

Let us let go of every wound that has pierced us.

Let us let go of the sin that so easily tries to trip us up.

Let us throw off everything that hinders us from the mission God has given us.

So we can run with endurance the race God has set before us to run…. let us seek God for what we need to let go of. Although it may be difficult, what do you need to quit today?
