Suggested reading: Psalm 28
Like so many of the psalms, Psalm 28 is fueled by emotion and in its entirety expresses two wildly opposite extremes. David begins by penning words of great anguish and desperate distress over his situation, and then there’s a pivotal moment where everything changes, and we see him gush over who he knows God to be and what He has done for him in the past. What started with shouts and cries for help turns into exuberant praise and rejoicing.
This is one of the many reasons I love the psalms. So many of them are written raw and real, indicative to how many of us feel from time to time – dancing between our desperation to receive help in our circumstance and being confident in the One Who we know will help us through anything.
Paul talks of this pivotal moment in taking every thought captive.
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
– 2 Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)
The negative narrative that often swirls around in our heads doesn’t have the final say for any Christ follower. The Word of God, which lasts the test of time, will renew our mind of every doubt, every seed of frustration, every fear, every half-truth and every lie. I believe that this must have been the change in the psalmist’s mind that brought about a change in perspective as he went from being distraught to being confident and full of praise. Sweet sisters in Christ, we have the privilege and authority to do the same – we take every thought captive, and we bring God our praise.
“The Lord is my strength and my shield;
My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped;
Therefore my heart greatly rejoices,
And with my song I will praise Him.”
- Psalm 28:7 (NKJV)
