Recently, I seem to have heard the phrase “Time heals all wounds” quite a bit. I’m sure it’s a familiar phrase to you. But it’s got me thinking… is this common saying, while meant to bring comfort to people, even true?
Time certainly can help with changing our perspective or distancing ourselves from the immediate heartache of what happened or who caused it.
Time also can mask the wounds. Time can allow our wounds to manifest into bitterness, spreading the hurt and causing a multitude of walls to build up around us as a way to self-preserve. (I’m not saying we shouldn’t have boundaries – we should! Jesus did!)
Time doesn’t heal all wounds. Only Jesus can.
Healing can be immediate. Healing can happen in a process over time.
But, either way, true healing of our wounds can only happen through the work of Jesus in our lives.
Here’s the thing: dealing with our wounds calls us to be honest with ourselves. The Spirit of God reveals the true extent of the wound and also the state of our heart amidst it all. Unmasking the severity of what’s at hand and also the root of the issue - laying bare our inmost being before a Holy God and allowing Him to mend us from the inside out.
“God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” – Psalm 147:3
Our capacity to heal from the wounding’s in our life doesn’t’ depend on time, but how much we put our trust in the Healer. We have to hand our wounds over to Him, instead of us keeping them in our control. And as we do that the Holy Spirit continues to shape us into the likeness of Jesus, He shapes our attitude, our perspective, our conversation, our hearts.
What He binds up, He restores.
He strengthens.
He speaks truth into the middle of it all.
Is there brokenness that you’ve masked over in your life? Is there something you’ve been battling with that you need to hand over to God? Let’s let the Healer do what only He can do, and release our control to Him.
“Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are the one I praise.” - Jeremiah 17:14
