My Rock, My Refuge

“Let all that I am wait quietly before God,

For my hope is in Him.

He alone is my rock and my salvation,

My fortress where I will not be shaken.

My victory and honor come from God alone.

He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me.

O people, trust in Him at all times.

Pour out your heart to Him,

For God is our refuge.” - Psalm 62:5-8

I love lingering over the writings of King David. His words inspire me. He doesn’t hide his emotions from God, but instead bears all things before Him. David puts words to his anguish and a voice to his tormented mind. He laments. He pours out his needs, his wants, and begs God to change his circumstances. He confesses his sin, where he has failed, and identifies his suffering.

But then He exalts the LORD. He praises Him for what He knows to be true. He claims where His hope lies. He remembers his salvation. He makes the choice to take refuge in God alone, despite his circumstance.

Isn’t that such an encouraging reminder of how to pray?

Get out all the stuff that’s on your mind… say it all to God, not holding back your emotions or frustration, and then bring it all back to Who He is and what He’s done. Remembering that God is in control. That He alone holds the victory.

Using these ancient prayers and praises as jumping-points for our own prayer time, really reminds me to never stop sharing where I’m at. To never stop bringing all my stuff to God. Never stop telling Him my struggles. Never stop being in His presence. Never stop listening for Him. Never stop waiting for Him. Never ever stop hoping.

“Dear God, I will wait here quietly before You today,

For my hope is in You.

You alone are my rock and my salvation,

You are my fortress where I will not be shaken.

My victory and honor come from You alone.

You are my refuge, my rock no one can take me away from.

I choose to trust in You today.

I pour out my heart before You Lord

For You are my everything, Amen.”
