Miracle of Multiplication

In the western culture that we live in, the demand for ‘more’ has the market working to ensure that the supply meets the demands. But when it comes to Jesus He tends not to work that way.

In John 6, we read how a huge crowd of people - 5,000+ of them - gathered around Jesus as they were drawn to His teaching and the miraculous signs that He had been doing. Turning to one of His disciples, Jesus questioned where they could buy food. Philip responded, that even if they had worked for months they still wouldn’t be able to pay for all that it would cost to feed everyone who was there. But then Andrew spoke up, “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish.” Knowing the miracle He would perform, Jesus instructed to have the crowd sit down.

“Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. He did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted.” (John 6:11)

It’s easy to move in a supply-and-demand mindset; but here, Jesus was giving thanks for what seemed like an insignificant supply, but knowing the demand would still be met.

Five loaves and two fish in hand.

Whatever I have in my hands – that the Lord has entrusted to me – I’m expected to use.

I can subtract from it.

Divide it.

Consume it.

But it’s only when we give it back to the Lord, can He multiply it.

5,000+ people fed and 12 baskets of leftovers gathered.

What we do with what He’s entrusted to us matters.

Our time.

Out talent.

Our treasure.

What has He placed in your hands? What impact could it have if you were to give it back to the Lord? Just imagine the miracle that He could do with what’s in your hands.
