“Show me, LORD, my life’s end and the number of my days;
Let me know how fleeting my life is.” -Psalm 39:4
Sounds pretty dark at first glance, I know. But the psalmist wrote these words in the torment of his pain and suffering. King David poured out these words of desperation to the Lord, asking that God would remind him just how brief his time on earth was, as his circumstance at the time seemed far too much to bear.
Have you had seasons like that? Where life just seemed too much to withstand?
“You have made my days a mere handbreadth;
The span of my years is as nothing before you.”- v.5
Our time on earth is so brief in comparison to eternity. Life on earth is short no matter the span of days. No longer than the width of our hand.
While I don’t think anyone wants to keep this the focus of our day-to-day living, I think there’s something about taking time to reflect on our purpose of why we’re here, and what we’re doing with the time that we have.
“Everyone is but a breath.”- v.5
What are we doing with the numbered breaths that we’ve been given?
As followers of Jesus, our breath has great purpose! Our lives, while they may be fleeting in the grand scheme of eternity, have great meaning. Our lives speak volumes to those around us who don’t yet know Jesus as their personal Saviour. Our lives are living letters written for all to read. (ref 2 Corinthians 3:2-3). How we live has greater impact than we truly know.
How beautiful would it be if the legacy we left behind was a life dedicated to the celebration of God’s grace?
Known for the joy that comes from accepting the gift of salvation.
Known for the love that exemplifies the sacrificial love of Jesus.
Known for the truth that comes only from soaking in the Word of God.
Known for the adventure, wonders, and miracles that come from a life full of the Spirit of God.
Eternity will be glorious! There’s no question about that! But until then, we have a beautiful gift to give to this world – a life reflecting the hope, purpose, and grace of Jesus. Only I can fulfill what God has planned for me to do. Only you can fulfill what God has planned for you to do. Today seems like a great day to celebrate the life we’ve been given. A perfect opportunity to realize the privilege we have to partner with Him to leave an eternal impact on those He’s placed around us. But today is the day, because our lives are a mere handbreadth.
