“Commit your works to the Lord,
And your thoughts will be established.” – Proverbs 16:3 (NKJV)
What’s the point in making plans, when we don’t know the future?
How are we to live wisely with the time that we have been given?
We each have a purpose and there are plans set out for us, but the One Who holds the future is the One Who knows the plans that He has specifically for me. He also knows the number of days that are allotted to me and all that I can handle with His strength. As a Jesus follower, it’s His plans and purpose for my life that are what really counts – and I desire to do what He wants of me. But what if I don’t know fully what those plans are?
I love the wisdom of this proverb, perhaps mostly because I can draw out an action and a result from it. While there may be many times when God clearly lays out a path for us and it’s confirmed before starting… there are also often many other times when we don’t know what next steps to take. And so we pray, and listen, and pray some more – and we step out in faith, committing our actions to Him. When we choose to submit the activities of our daily living to God, the Holy Spirit will make it evident to us if we’ve headed in a wrong direction; likewise, He’ll also confirm if we’ve stepped out in faith and headed in the right direction.
The result of surrendering our plans to God, leads us to succeed. Perhaps not how the world defines success, but certainly how God does. For He will certainly give us clarity in our minds as we depend on Him for our day-to-day living… He establishes His thoughts in us.
When we commit our works to God, we need to be prepared for Him to interrupt us. That’s the reason why it needs to be a daily choice to surrender to Him. How will we react if God interrupts us and rearranges our plans? If each day we take the posture of heart-surrender before Him – “whatever You want of me Lord” – I believe that He’ll change our desires to be aligned with His, which in turn changes the way we see our own situation and that of the world around us.
May we be women who choose daily to live wisely and commit each day to Him.
