Living Fruit

“Words satisfy the mind as much as fruit does the stomach;

good talk is as gratifying as a good harvest.

Words kill, words give life;

they’re either poison or fruit – you choose.” – Proverbs 18:20-21 (MSG)

Our tongues hold power. In the natural realm, but more importantly in the spiritual realm. What we speak-out brings life or death.

I wonder how much we fully grasp the weight that our words have?

In James chapter 3, we’re told that an unbridled tongue is a dangerous weapon to wield. Words are like tiny sparks that can set a whole forest on fire. Our words can produce poison, or they can produce life-giving fruit. Words flow from one’s character just as water bubbles up from the earth. And we’re responsible for the consequences of the outcome.

In our own strength we have no hope of taming our tongue. (ref. James 3:8). But in every circumstance God doesn’t leave us without hope! Thank goodness!

As we stay in close proximity to Jesus, surrendered to His Spirit and His ways, it is by His strength that He can still our tongues from speaking that venomous poison that causes all kinds of curses and pain. It’s by the leading and transformation of the Holy Spirit in our lives that we can speak words of life. Words full of encouragement, hope, truth, and purpose.

Let’s be women who produce living fruit with our words. And the days that we fall prey to producing poison, let’s ask for forgiveness, amend our wrongs, and begin again by asking the Holy Spirit to bridle our tongues and change the root of where those words are birthed out of. Praise God, each day is a new day of grace that we’re given to produce abundant fruit.
