Jesus said, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” – John 8:31-32
Our world is inundated with information and claims of what truth is. We live in an age where research happens at our fingertips, knowledge is a Google search away, and there is no lack of advice that can be found on social media. It can be easy to get lost in the sea of voices, listening to the people who hold platforms on the internet. But with so many conflicting points of view and false-truths, how do we really know what is truth? Some days it just seems that the information that the world has to offer, only brings chaos to the mind. But what God offers, is peace amongst the chaos of the world around us. (ref. John 14:27)
Information is not bad, but the source of our information is key to us forming the beliefs that we hold. For disciples of Jesus, we’re to cling to His teachings to know what He defines as Truth. His Truth on love, identity, beauty, sexuality, purpose, wisdom, and so much more.
Discipleship is, what it’s always been - a call back to the grassroots of our faith – following Jesus as Master and Lord of our life. It’s nothing new, but it may be what we’ve been out of rhythm of practicing. His ways, His Word, and His Spirit are the foundation of what our lives are to be lived on. Not in part, but in whole. Not mixed through the filter of the world around us, or passed through cultural standards of today, but holding true to the Word of God is what will open our eyes to Truth. Allowing us to hold a Holy perspective. A Kingdom perspective.
While the world offers what is carnal and fleeting, God offers us what is holy and eternal. If we truly believe that what God offers us is best, then we need to cling to His teaching and guidance so we can be unmoved by distorted perspectives, and unshaken by the popular opinions of our culture, as we surrender and submit to Christ’s Spirit in us.
Let’s take some time to reflect today:
Whose voice am I listening to?
By what standard am I defining truth?
