Hebrew 4:12 proclaims, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (ESV)
When we read the Word of God with an open heart, we allow God to penetrate deeply into our lives, exposing the inner most parts of us to ourselves. Yep, ourselves. Isn’t it interesting that we can be blinded by our own junk? We can compartmentalize things in our lives, even relationships, because we don’t want to face the deep-rooted issues at the core of us.
The Word of God is living and active and desires to make us new. It’s the beautiful journey of a Christ follower, to walk in surrender as we allow Jesus – the Word of God – to remove from our lives all that is unholy. The prophet Isaiah said it this way, “We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.” (64:6). The only hope we have for Salvation and transformation is through Jesus Christ. Even the righteous acts that we do out of our own strength are like filthy rags without Jesus at the center. Left to ourselves, it’s so easy to fall away from Truth.
It certainly isn’t always pleasant and joyful to have our inner thoughts and intentions of our heart exposed to us, but it’s necessary for those who desire to be like Jesus… those who are fully embracing what a disciple of Jesus is all about. The thing is, just like Salvation, we also have a choice with our transformation. Are we going to choose to listen to His Word, His Spirit, His voice, that is calling us to Himself… drawing us to come up higher and see from a point of view that we haven’t seen before? Are we going to surrender our eyes to see what He wants to show us? And surrender our mind to understand what He wants us to know?
May we be women who aren’t settled to stay how we’ve always been or be complacent in our Christianity that we miss out on what God has for us. May we be women who cling to Jesus. Cling to the living and active Word of God. Cling to the voice of Christ’s Spirit in us. And cling to surrendering our ways to His.
