“I will raise my eyes to the mountains;
From where will my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.
He will not allow your foot to slip;
He who watches over you will not slumber.
Behold, He who watches over Israel
Will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your protector;
The Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun will not beat down on you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
The Lord will protect you from all evil;
He will keep your soul.
The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in
From this time and forever.” – Psalm 121 (NASB)
I love reading through the Psalms, especially the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134) which were sung by the Jews on their journey to and from Jerusalem, for their pilgrim feasts that they celebrated. I love the depiction of the journey that they would’ve walked, outlining the scenery and how the psalmist pointed everything that was around them back to God. Mountains, hills, sun, moon…
While we’re not making the long journey on foot to Jerusalem to worship the Lord, we each have our own journey that we’re on. Our individual life adventure, where the Maker of Heaven and Earth is wooing us to come into His presence. To know Him. To experience all that He has to offer us as we trust in Him.
He is our Helper. Our Maker.
He’s keeping watch and not sleeping or getting tired.
He’s our true protector, never leaving our side.
He’s keeping guard of our souls, directing us to paths that keep us from the evil one.
May we be women who pay attention to His protection and His guidance.
Where will our help come from?
The One who is keeping guard.
The Maker of Heaven and Earth.
