“We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” – 2 Corinthians 4:7
Unlike today, in ancient times, they didn’t have access to banks. They didn’t have the ability to store money as we do, under password-secure withdrawal. In those days, valuables and treasures were hidden in everyday containers – clay jars - in secret places or hidden underground.
Paul uses the distinction between the inexpensive jars of clay that would hold great treasures, as a comparison to the precious gift that all followers of Jesus hold.
We, ourselves, are like the jars of clay. Despite our sin and weakness, for all who believe in Jesus, we have been presented with the gift of light. What a vast contrast of the insignificant and unattractiveness of the bearers of light, with the invaluable worth and beauty of the Light itself.
The beautiful message of our salvation is the light that this world needs to see, hear, touch, and experience. Jesus is the light of the world (John 8:12) and we are the jars of clay that hold this precious gift for all to know Him.
It is not that we are anything of value, in and of ourselves, but that our value is in our divine purpose – that people may recognize that this all surpassing power in us, is God alone!
There is nothing in this world that we should cherish like that of the gospel of Christ Jesus. What grace the Father has bestowed upon us! The same grace that has forgiven our sins, is the same grace that - despite who we’ve been, or what we’ve done – can draw others to know of this Treasure they have yet to experience.
We are like jars of clay, carrying the greatest treasure this world could ever know. Our greatest joy and our greatest task – that we cherish this gift and share it with all who will listen.
