Jesus said to His disciples, “I’ve loved you the way my Father has loved me. Make yourselves at home in my love. If you keep my commands, you’ll remain intimately at home in my love. That’s what I’ve done – kept my Father’s commands and made myself at home in His love.
I’ve told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. This is the best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I’m no longer calling you servants because servants don’t understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I’ve named you friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from my Father.” - John 15:9-15 (MSG)
I love the invitation to make ourselves at home in Christ’s love! What a beautiful shift of perspective – remembering that we are foreigners in this land, destined for our eternal home. The Love that brings us through Heaven’s gates, first sacrificed Himself for each one of us on a wooden cross, and through His death, conquered all death. What kind of love is this? Love that lays down one’s life for His friends, so that we might experience the fullness of His Joy and His Love and know His Father as intimately as He does.
Today, as so many indulge in things of this world that bring temporary joy, let us be women who indulge in the love of Jesus. Loving others as He loved us. With sacrificial love – the love our Father bestowed on us when He sent His one and only Son to die so that we could live.
What does that practically look like? Perhaps the best way is sharing the Love that changed us. What an honour it is, to help others make themselves at home in Christ’s love.
