The prophet Samuel followed the LORD’s instructions to go to Bethlehem to the house of Jesse, to anoint who God had chosen for the second King of Israel. After Samuel took one look at Jesse’s oldest son Eliab, he thought, “Surely this is the LORD’s anointed!”
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” (reference 1 Samuel 16)
The LORD knows our true character, because He can see all that has taken root in our hearts. He knows our motives. He knows our thoughts that have been produced out of the overflow of our heart.
God desperately longs for pure hearts and promises to strengthen those whose hearts are set on pleasing Him alone. “The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him” (2 Chronicles 16:9)
God isn’t interested in settling for only half our hearts… I think this is the beauty behind Him loving us enough to meet us where we are when we first come to believe in Jesus as our Saviour. But His purpose and hope for our lives, isn’t to leave us in the pit of sin that He found us in. The cross isn’t a band-aid solution to our heart issues.
The very love that held Jesus on the cross until His death, is the same love that desires to perform heart surgery on each one of us. He wants to deal with anything in us that isn’t of Him. He desires to remove anything that doesn’t bring value to our physical bodies, our mental state, our security, our confidence, our attitude, our desires….and the well-being of those around us.
Our God is watching over us.
He desires to strengthen us. Heal us.
Move us from where we were to where He wants us to be.
To make us whole…. spiritually, mentally, emotionally, physically.
And He can do this best when we offer Him all of our heart and allow Him to have His way in our life.
