Guarding Well

“Guard your heart above all else,

for it determines the course of your life.” – Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)

How’s your heart really doing?

What's your action plan to guard it?

Our hearts are central to how we live our lives. Our hearts are where the battle between wisdom and foolishness and righteousness and evil rages on. What that should tell us glaringly is that that means our hearts can be led astray. If we try and compartmentalize our faith, where we allow certain areas of our life to succumb to our fleshly desires, our heart will end up tainted by these passions, possibly opening up to a spiral of unhealth.

Our words originate in the heart. Jesus said, “For whatever is in your heart determines what you say. A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart.” (ref. Matthew 12:34-35). Jesus goes on to explain about how unaddressed sin in our heart, defiles the body. “The words you speak come from the heart – that’s what defiles you. For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying and slander. These are what defile you.” (ref. Matthew 15:18-20) Jesus calls us to a higher standard of living in purity. Free from the bondage of sin. We know then that it must be important to address what’s in our heart and to guard it with great diligence.

Holy Spirit, will you search my heart? Show me what needs to be addressed.

The greatest key to guarding our heart, is to be in close intimacy with the Word of God and His Spirit. While the Word will reveal to us the knowledge of how God desires His children to live, the Spirit will quicken our heart to repent, and turn to the path that honours God and is purposed for us for righteous living.

Holy Spirit help me to guard my heart. Help me listen fully to Your direction and to obey Your leading. Help me to trust the way You show me to go.
