In a world where we can find so much at our fingertips in a matter of seconds, it’s easy to follow along with voices that feel good. That are inspiring. That align well with a human moral standard. A problem that can arise with listening to so many other voices, is that they have the possibility to muddy our view of hearing God’s voice and what He is trying to say to us.
I think it’s important to have trusted teachers and pastors that we follow. It’s important to have real-life people that we interact with, who we sit with and wrestle out the challenges in our life with; who we can dialogue with and who will not only listen but will respond with their learnings as well.
But there is nothing greater than the Word of God to ground us and speak truth into our lives.
“Every Scripture has been written by the Holy Spirit, the breath of God. It will empower you by its instruction and correction, giving you the strength to take the right direction and lead you deeper into the path of godliness. Then you will be God’s servant, fully mature and perfectly prepared to fulfill any assignment God gives you.” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17
If we don’t know what God’s Word says, we are prone to create our own system of belief.
It makes me think of the quote by William Booth:
“The chief danger of the twentieth century will be: religion without the Holy Ghost, Christianity without Christ, forgiveness without repentance, salvation without regeneration, heaven without hell.”
Such danger arises when we take bits and pieces of the Word of God and we pair it with our own version of what truth is.
As believers in Jesus, we are meant to live a life worthy of our calling (ref. Ephesians 4:1). Not that we earn our Salvation, but that our lives would resemble that of what a Jesus follower is. A life like His. A life that is gradually changing through the power of the Holy Spirit and the inspired Word of God - into a life of holiness, that is set apart from the rest of the world.
We are called to be set apart!
We are called to speak God’s Truth, and not truth we’ve pieced together ourselves.
We are called to a life of righteousness.
How?
By knowing God. Spending time in His Word. Letting the Scriptures instruct us, correct us, and breath fresh life into us daily. Giving us the strength to make the next step in the right direction, in faith as He leads us. As we follow, we begin to discern the voice of God’s Spirit in our lives from all others.
God is worth us living such a life... for He is greater than all others.
