“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases,
His mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
Great is your faithfulness.
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
“therefore I will hope in Him.” – Lamentations 3:22-24 (ESV)
Great sorrow had swept across the nation of Israel. Jerusalem and the Temple of God had been destroyed, leaving the prophet Jeremiah in deep mourning. Jeremiah recounts verse after verse of the devastation that is all around him. Sin had brought a deep caveat between the people and God, and their refusal to turn away from the desires of their flesh, and their disregard for holiness. Few survivors were left in the land, and he was pleading with those that remained to turn back to God. Jeremiah cried out in agony until he had no more tears to cry. (ref. Lamentations 2:11).
But God was still faithful. God was still compassionate, showing mercy to those who turned to Him. God’s promises still remained true; the inheritance that was spoken over the nation of Israel would prevail.
Most have not experienced the war-torn devastation that the nation of Israel has, however many have experienced deep sorrow and pain in their personal lives. Perhaps, you’ve experienced, like Jeremiah, crying in agony until you had no more tears left to cry. The injustice, torment and evil that the enemy has oppressed upon the innocent is enough to stir up anger in anyone.
But God is the same, yesterday, today and forever. He is love. He is faithful. He restores and redeems all that the enemy meant for evil. His steadfast love for us never ends. New mercies are waiting for all of us each morning. He is our portion and our daily hope. Whatever the circumstance, our God reigns, our God is Faithful and true. Great is His Faithfulness.
Personal reflection:
In what ways have you experienced the faithfulness of God in the midst of personal devastation?
