“One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.” – Psalm 27:4
What do you most desire?
David’s confidence and security were in God as his firm foundation. David’s belief in Who God is stirred a heart that was surrendered to Him and most desired to worship Him. If you’ve read about King David’s life, you may recall that David didn’t always act out of that surrendered heart… his own passions and desires crept in, and it was a slippery slope that led to broken relationships, deceit, manipulation and eventually blood on his hands. (ref. 2 Samuel 11) The reality is, it can so easily happen with us too.
Sin has such a deep-seeded effect on our lives. And while on this earth we will never be without sin, we always have a battle at our core... who will take our focus and therefore lead our lives. Will it be the Holy Spirit that leads our lives, or will we succumb to our sinful nature and let that stir our actions. It’s not just a daily decision… but often a moment-by-moment choice.
So what’s going to help us make the best choice?
How do we center the desires of our heart around that which would be honouring to God?
“My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with me.’ And my heart responds, ‘LORD, I am coming’.”– Psalm 27:8
Our hearts will be God-focused as we continue to choose to be with Him. Make space for His presence. Understand His voice and His leading. It’s not a one-and-done thing. But an ever-increasing surrender to commit to knowing Him and loving Him in return. It’s turning back to Him over and over again, when we’ve gotten off track and need to address the sin that’s started to creep in. It’s longing for more of Him and less of us.
Responsive Prayer:
“Lord I thank you for Your Spirit that lives in me. I thank you that wherever I go, there You are. That your presence resides in me and Your love for me is inconceivable and unending. Lord would you forgive me for the ways and times that I’ve desired my passions instead of trusting You for what’s best for me. Would You put the desire in my heart to trust You more? Love You more? Be with You more? Thank you, Lord, that You desire to be with me and talk to me. Give me ears to listen and a heart steadfast on surrendering to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
