Expectant. That’s exactly what Advent is all about! Waiting with hope… full of expectancy that God would do what He said He would do.
That He would give of Himself… wrapped in flesh and He would come to us. Aren’t you so thankful that He did?
“Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot –
yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root.
And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him-
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
He will delight in obeying the Lord.
He will not judge by appearance
nor make a decision based on hearsay.
He will give justice to the poor
and make fair decisions for the exploited.
The earth will shake at the force of his word,
and one breath from his mouth will destroy the wicked.
He will wear righteousness like a belt
and truth like an undergarment.” – Isaiah 11:1-5
What was prophesied of the coming Messiah long ago, did indeed happen. Our God is a promise-keeping God! The Branch did indeed fall in the family line of David and entered into time in the most unexpected way. Hope fulfilled by the coming of the tiny baby King, is what leaves us expectant for all God said that He would fulfill to be fulfilled…in His timing He will come again!
This God… our God… is a God of expectant mystery – His ways are above our ways and He knows the beginning from the end and all the details that flow in between. But He is also a God of great intimacy… so personal to each and every one – full of patience and love and grace, for every single one of us. So intimate and yet so grand. Known and yet mysterious. Ever near despite the vastness of His Presence everywhere. He came for us! And He still pursues us in the intimacy of our everyday lives. And He will indeed come again with power and might in the second coming of Jesus.
Are we ready? Are we expectant?
