Counsel that Stands

“A person may have many plans in their heart.

But the Lord’s purpose wins out in the end.”

- Proverbs 19:21 (NIRV)

We can have really good plans – well thought out with detailed strategies on how to reach our goals - and while they can be good plans, they may not be God’s plans for us.

“Nevertheless, the Lord’s counsel – that will stand.” (NKJV)

How do we get the counsel of the Lord, to ensure that our plans are aligned with His? How do we know if His purpose matches the plans we have prepared?

If we surrender ourselves to prayer, seeking Truth and listening to Godly counsel of fellow Believers, then we will know if our plans are birthed out of God’s plans or from the root our own agendas.

Prayer shapes our heart to seek after God’s will and not our own. Prayer is our time in solitude with God where we enter into desiring Him above all else. Where we surrender to making time about Him. It’s in that place where we commune with God and wait and listen.

The Scriptures are another way that we receive God’s counsel. God is the same yesterday, today and forever, so what He has said still stands. The Word of God is living and active and it brings revelation to our situation. His plans for us will never contradict His Word. Knowing His Word molds our minds to think the way He thinks.

Surrounding ourselves with followers of Jesus also helps guide us in the right direction. Finding those who are mature in their faith, because their lives produce the evidence that they walk with Him, allows us to glean from their knowledge and discernment. Godly counsel can be tested in prayer and by the Word of God, and that which is holy will be proven.

When we have our eyes open and our heart and soul surrendered to where the Holy Spirit is moving, we won’t miss His divine purpose for our lives. God’s purpose stands the test of time and will prevail.

So let’s not be confident of our plans because they seem great or feel right. Let’s be confident of our plans because we’ve sought Godly counsel – counsel that stands.
