Child-like Faith

“God, brilliant Lord, yours is a household name.

Nursing infants gurgle choruses about You;

toddlers shout the songs that drown out enemy talk,

and silence atheist babble.

I look up at your macro-skies, dark and enormous,

Your handmade sky-jewelry,

moon and stars mounted in their settings.

Then I look at my micro-self and wonder,

Why do you bother with us?

Why take a second look our way?

Yet we’ve so narrowly missed being gods,

bright with Eden’s dawn light.

You put us in charge of your handcrafted world,

repeated to us your Genesis-charge,

Made us lords of sheep and cattle,

even animals out in the wild,

Birds flying and fish swimming,

whales singing in the ocean deeps.

God, brilliant Lord, your name echoes around the world.”

- Psalm 8 (Msg)

All of creation pales in comparison with that of our Lord God. His name speaks of His power, His might and His authority. He alone is God - like no other. All of creation points to Him and reveals His splendor.

In light of Who He is, should we not be insignificant in His eyes? Yet, He created us a little lower than the angels and gave us dominion over all the earth. His care for us outshines that of any human-being, and He takes great delight in showing us how creation sings His praises. Babies and children are great teachers to us adults, as their sounds and songs speak of God’s strength, and kick the enemy under their feet where he belongs. Oh, that we would have child-like faith, that trust Him at His Word, and follow Him as His Spirit leads us!

When I meditate on this Psalm, I can’t help but be comforted by how much God values us. We have great worth because we bear His name – we are part of His household, and an image-bearer of His Truth, His Love, and His Story. May we delight in making His name famous, and in His glory and His renown.

“Father God, would you give me that child-like faith, that trusts You at Your Word, and follows where You lead. Remove any and all barriers in the way of me fulfilling the purpose that You have for me and draw me close to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
