Built to Last

In His famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “Why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.” – Luke 6:46-49 (NLT)

The name ‘Lord’ means ‘Master’. If we’re claiming Jesus is Lord, we must then believe that He is the Master over our lives. A master has authority over his servants and how they behave, how they represent Him. While many love to claim Jesus as Saviour, fewer have allowed Him to be Lord of their lives. The modern movement of the Church in the west has been blinded in believing that we can compartmentalize ‘Jesus as Saviour’ from ‘Jesus as Lord’, but He is one and the same. It’s never been and never will be a ‘choose your own adventure’ relationship with Jesus.

The Message translation emphasizes the foundation as Words to build our life on – Jesus the Word incarnate. “Why are you so polite with me, always saying ‘Yes, sir,’ and ‘That’s right, sir, but never doing a thing I tell you? These words I speak to you are not mere additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundation words, words to build a life on. If you work the words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who dug deep and laid the foundation of his house on bedrock. When the river burst its banks and crashed against the house, nothing could shake it; it was built to last. But if you just use my words in Bible studies and don’t work them into your life, you are like a dumb carpenter who built a house but skipped the foundation. When the swollen river came crashing in, it collapsed like a house of cards. It was a total loss.” – Luke 6:46-49 (MSG)

If we call Him Lord, we’re expected to do as He says. Our words are proven to be true when our lives display our surrender through action, how we live in reverence to Him, live in opposition to how the world lives. We’re to allow Him to be the firm foundation that our entire life is built upon. Oh yes, the storms will come, and the tumultuous heartaches of this world will try and tear us down, but with Jesus at our center we are built to last. Built to withstand anything that the enemy tries to use against us.

When we call out to Him, "Lord! Lord!" may it not be in vain.

Personal reflection:

Have I claimed Jesus as my Saviour, without claiming Jesus as Lord?

Is there any area in my life that I’ve held back from allowing Jesus to have authority over?
