Bring on the Cheer

Are you a worrier?

It seems that some of us tend to naturally be prone to it than others. It’s not a trait I’m proud of, and I have to continue to work hard at turning my worries into prayers. To leave what’s on my mind or stressing me out, to God, and not let it consume me. Can you relate?

“Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up.” – Proverbs 12:25

Isn’t it so true though? You can be in a state of worry, and then receive some good news or suddenly have your mind shifted to a new perspective…and bam! There’s hope. Things seem less dim!

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.” – Proverbs 17:22

I’m convinced that satan loves when we are downcast…sapped of our energy and strength to keep going… he wants us to focus on our brokenness and to believe that we could never get past it, or could never be pieced back together.

What I’ve learned this year, in the dark and downcast times, is that God has never felt so close to me… He shows up in ways - small…simple… intimate - that bring cheer to my soul. That even when circumstances seem bleak, He reminds me He’s there. He’s my constant encouragement. Like medicine for a broken soul, He binds to strengthen. He binds to heal. He binds to restore. He binds to bring encouragement and cheer.

I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely up for more cheer!

Isn’t it amazing when we have the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus, and we can be that cheer for someone else? We can help bring some cheer and joy to a bleak circumstance. How great would it be if that was our focus today? To bring some cheer to someone else? Let’s make that our prayer today – Lord show us who needs some encouragement, so we can share some cheer to those who are sapped of strength and discouraged.
