“But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for pray.” – Luke 5:16 (TLB)
There are seasons in life where it seems to be a genuine struggle to find a moment of solitude. While during those seasons, we may have so many people or things calling for our attention, it’s important to recognize the value of solitude and to figure out a way to incorporate the rhythm of solitude into our lives – regardless of the pace. Without secluding ourselves, it becomes so hard to recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit amidst the noise of everything else around us.
During Jesus’ ministry on earth, so many gathered around and beckoned for His attention. He lovingly spent time with them – preaching, healing, eating with them. And beyond the quality time He spent with people, we’re told that He took time away from everyone to be alone. He went into quiet places for the purpose of being alone with His Father. For prayer. For direction. For strength.
In a world where so many things are screaming for our attention, we can be so consumed with ‘doing’ and attending to each need. How easily we can become depleted if we don’t take time away in silence to be with our Father instead of following Jesus’ example. It’s in His presence that He replenishes our soul, where His Spirit guides us, and where His Word fills us with fresh energy, things with which nothing else can compare.
As we head into the weekend, may we be determined to take time to withdraw from everything and everyone around us… whether it’s only for 5 minutes or we’re able to commit to much longer. May we be women who seek the holy, beautiful solitude that fueled Jesus, trusting that we also will be fueled by Him in the privacy of His presence.
