“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28
What we know, is important.
Unfortunately, in the world around us, truth and knowledge often take a backseat to errors and opinions. It seems far more prevalent to point out mistakes and pronounce judgment than to value what’s true and take time to fully understand things.
So, when Truth is something that we can know, it is something that we should cling to with every part of our being.
This word from the Lord is a promise for all of His people to hold on to, but it comes with a pre-condition: It’s for those who love God – not just those who use His name for their benefit. We can know that God is in control, even when He doesn’t let us in on all the details of what and how He’s working everything together. (ref. Romans 8:26)
It’s a definitive promise – in that all things work together, not just some things. Paul is not saying here that all things are good… but that God weaves all the good, the bad, and the painful together for His good and for His purpose for us. He redeems every last bit of it. If you’ve walked through any heartache at all, this may be a tough pill to swallow or to have a clear perspective on. Especially when God’s view of ‘redemption’ and ‘good’ are different from our human understanding.
Here’s what I think it comes down to, though: Do we believe that God is still in control when life seems to be crumbling down? Or when we don’t get what we believe is good for us? Do we believe Him when He doesn’t provide for us how we want or how we’re expecting… especially after we’ve prayed so long, hard, and faithfully? Do we trust Him anyway?
I don’t know the ‘Why’ behind so much of what happens on this temporary home of ours, but I do choose to believe Who is in ultimate control over my life. Even when things don’t make sense – today or even 5 years from now. I believe that if we don’t see it clearly now, we’ll see His perspective in full as we walk through Heaven’s gates and see Him face to face. When we see Jesus, and He wipes every single tear away (ref. Revelation 21:4) and He shows us what we couldn’t see before. He’ll show us how He made it all ‘good’.
May we hold our posture of trusting Him. Keep drawing our eyes upward to heaven, and our knees set downward in prayer. Seeking Him even when we don’t understand it all. Placing our trust in Him alone, holding to the promise of the hope He’s given us that He indeed is making all things good.
