“As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind beggar was sitting beside the road. When he heard the noise of a crowd going past, he asked what was happening. They told him that Jesus the Nazarene was going by. So he began shouting, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
“Be quiet!” the people in front yelled at him.
But he only shouted louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
When Jesus heard him, he stopped and ordered that the man be brought to him. As the man came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?”
“Lord,” he said, “I want to see!”
And Jesus said, “All right, receive your sight! Your faith has healed you.” Instantly the man could see, and he followed Jesus, praising God. And all who saw it praised God, too.”
– Luke 18:35-43 (NLT)
I read this account of the blind beggar and his longing to get to Jesus and I wonder what his thought process was when he began yelling out. Unaffected by the crowd around him, who were trying to silence him, this man shouted louder. His hope that Jesus was Who He said He was – the Son of David, the Messiah, stirred up action in him, which led to a miracle.
It’s amazing what lengths people will go to when they have hope. Hope changes our perspective. Hope carries us through the storms of life, until we’re flourishing on the other side of our trial. Hope beckons us to not give up, even when we can’t physically make it without some form of the miraculous happening. When we’re desperate enough for Jesus, for freedom, we’ll do things that others may look down upon us for. Desperation for the mercy of Jesus, may have people mocking us, trying to silence us, and even turning some away from us…. But will we cry out to Him anyway?
Where in your life are you asking Jesus for mercy? Are you desperate for His help?
We, like the blind beggar, have the same access to Jesus, where we can bring our plea – crying out to Him, for Him to move on our behalf. We can come desperate, confident that He will hear our heart’s cry and He will carry us through… either by granting what we ask of Him or providing a better solution that will keep us dependant on Him.
“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” – Hebrews 4:16 (NLT)
Let’s not grow weary of placing our petitions before Jesus today. Cry out for mercy! His grace always shows up in our hour of need – at just the right time.
